One of the humming birds that nest nearby.
Shhh . . .
I’m on my back porch swing this afternoon. The sun is shining and there is a slight breeze. Perfect back porch weather for September.
Harvest is just getting started and busyness on the farm continues yet we all need “be still” moments to stay connected. Connected with ourselves, our surroundings, our blessings, our creator and more.
I gave the swing a push, laid down, closed my eyes and listened.
Shhh . . .
The sounds – the creak, creak, creak of the chain rubbing on the eye bolt in the ceiling, the crunch of gravel from a car driving past, the “beep. beep, beep” of the JCB backing up at the farm, a soft note struck occasionally from the windchime. The different birds calling back and forth, a neighbor’s dog barking, the chopper starting up at the farm, a cow mooing. The tractor pulling the mixer wagon and the mixer wagon starting up as the tractor went down the alley, the leaves rattling when the wind gusted a bit, and the humming/buzzing of two hummingbirds that flit around the flowers on the back porch. The chunk, clunk of the wagon being pulled behind the tractor headed out to the field to carry home corn silage. The absence of the creaking of the swing as it slowed down.
Isn’t it amazing, the details God created for us? So many different sounds. Think about it. Sounds could have been limited. He didn’t need to put together our world in harmony. And, the ability to hear and recognize the differences? There are many who have lost that or have never had the privilege of having it, yet we take it all for granted.
Take a minute to escape the busyness, the craziness you live. Find a spot. Hone in on what you hear and notice the cadence, the pitch, the rhythm of what you hear.
Most importantly, thank God for the blessings, such as hearing, that he provided that we have come to expect instead of appreciate.
